Bed Bug Epidemic

Submitted by admin 26/02/2010 19:40

Britain is under threat from the bed bug- an insect that was once completely eradicated from our shores but is now back with a vengence.

An epidemic of bed bugs is sweeping the nation with reports of up to a 500% increase in the last two years. It is believed that the explosion in population is fuelled by the increase in air travel coupled with warmer summers, millions of bed bugs seem to be hitching a ride in our country on travellers clothes and suitcases, once here they breed like wildfire.

Many people think that an infestation of bed bugs is down to poor house keeping but this is just a common misconception, Although a poor hygienic environment can make the removal of the bugs more difficult it is not attributed to their pressence.

They feed on human blood by piercing the skin and sucking up to four times their body weight. It's not untill the bug has finshed feeding that the host will notice a red like bump with an itching sensation, not everyone reacts the same to a bed bug bite and some people do not react at all and go on living with the problem unnoticed. Bedbugs are notoriously hard to spot because they hide in mattresses or in cracks in flooring or walls and come out to feed between 1am and 5am, we have spent many hours looking for these insects and believe the notion that if you think you have bedbugs you proberly do! we advise vacuuming mattresses and cleaning regularly to keep them at bay.

Bedbugs are one of the hardest pests to eradicate and due to the massive increase we now offer a bedbug monitoring service for hotels, pubs, hospitals, guest houses etc. We can monitor and get on top of the problem before it gets out of hand. I think we can all agree that having these bugs invading is the last thing any business would ever want.
